5.11 RUSH 100 backpack - the tactical mule or the hiking Swiss army knife (+video)

  • Állapot: Aktuális

For harsh conditions, multi-day wilderness travel, military tasks, and for those who believe a backpack should not merely carry, but serve.

There are roughly two tribes in the world of backpacks. One tribe counts grams, cuts the handle off a toothbrush with a knife and then files down what remains, before deeply considering whether the plastic tips on shoelaces can still be morally justified in the development of modern humanity. The other tribe starts from the principle that if a pack cannot survive a downpour, a thicket, a bad decision, a fall from a rock and a few “I’ll just put this in as well” moments, then it may be an urban backpack, but it is not a companion.

The 5.11 RUSH 100 clearly belongs to the second tribe. It does not timidly follow you around the forest. It is more the type that stands in the doorway, gives you a sharp look, folds its arms and asks: “Pack properly. Would you like some help?”

5.11 Tactical primarily develops clothing and equipment for military, law-enforcement, firefighting, rescue and outdoor users. Interestingly, the roots of the brand reach back to the world of rock climbing, as “5.11” was originally one of the difficulty grades in the Yosemite Decimal System. The company later expanded towards tactical clothing and equipment, particularly among law-enforcement and military users.

First impressions

The 5.11 RUSH 100 is not a hiking pack with a military appearance, but a genuinely hard-use tactical pack that is also highly suitable for hiking. Practical, strong, comfortable and light! This is, understandably, a sensitive — or important — issue for classic hikers, but this pack can easily serve ordinary everyday requirements as well. I said: as well. Because on the other side of the scale, extreme loading is also part of its repertoire.

It is true, however, that the 5.11 RUSH 100 should not be approached as a classic hiking backpack. If someone picks it up after using a civilian trekking pack from Osprey, Deuter or Gregory, their first reaction will probably be: “Is this a backpack, or a smaller Maginot Line with zippers?” And there is some truth in that. But not because of its weight.

The 5.11 RUSH 100 is a deployment bag, bug-out bag, bushcraft pack, hunting pack and multi-day tactical hiking backpack all in one. It is not a temple of minimalism, but rather a well-designed garden where the first question is not: “How can we save 300 grams?” but rather: “How can the user carry heavy equipment comfortably, in changing situations, with fast access, over an extended period?”

This is a completely different philosophy. Not better or worse.

With civilian hiking packs, ventilation, freedom of movement, weight and ergonomics often come first. Tactical packs, however, add modularity, toughness, organisation, rapid access and external expansion that can be adapted to the task. The 5.11 RUSH 100 comes directly from that world.

5.11 RUSH 100 backpack specifications

Dimensions: 72.3 x 27.9 x 26 cm

Capacity: 60 litres

Weight: 2.6 kg

Material: 500D and 1050D Nylon

Design and materials

One of the strongest features of the 5.11 RUSH 100 is its carrying system. The internal aluminium and fibreglass frame, the heavily padded shoulder straps and the substantial hip belt all serve one purpose: to stop the load from sitting on your shoulders like a bad-tempered goblin, and instead transfer it neatly to your hips.

This is a crucial issue for anyone moving with heavy equipment. In military, hunting, bushcraft or winter hiking environments, the pack may easily weigh not 10–12 kg, but 20–30 kg or more. At that point, what matters is no longer how impressive it looks in the catalogue, but how the body tolerates the load over long hours.

The 5.11 RUSH 100 is extremely strong in this field. Based on both user feedback and my own experience, one of its major strengths is that its structure does not collapse under heavy loads. It does not begin to twist, nor does it turn into a sagging textile animal with a will of its own.

Even in extreme conditions, it remains a backpack. In fact: an excellent backpack.

Three-in-one system – the tactical pack and modularity

One of the most striking “extras” of the RUSH 100 is its pair of removable side pouches. Each has a capacity of approximately 3.5 litres, and with the supplied strap they can be converted into a small standalone bag, shoulder bag or waist pack.

This is not merely an eye-catching marketing trick; it genuinely makes sense in the field. The main pack can remain at camp, in a hide, in a vehicle or beside the tent, while smaller essentials — water, first aid, rain jacket, navigation kit, headlamp and food — can be carried separately. This system is very realistic from both military and bushcraft perspectives: we do not always want to carry our entire lives on our backs; sometimes a small slice of it is enough.

At the same time, this is where one of the critical points appears. The attachment of the side pouches is not a classic, completely rigid MOLLE solution, but a buckle-and-loop system. It works well during normal hiking, but during intense running, tactical movement or highly dynamic terrain, slight movement may occur. Not a tragedy, not the end of the world — but it is the kind of small detail you notice when you are no longer looking at a catalogue, but breathing heavily on a climb.

Materials – when nylon still believes in honour

The body of the pack is made from 500D nylon, while the lower, high-wear areas are made from 1050D nylon. This alone makes it clear that we are not dealing with the ultralight category. The aim here is not sacrifice at the altar of grams, but durability.

This pack is not delicate. Dense wilderness, thorny crossings, dragging it on the ground, dropping it on rocks, throwing it into a vehicle and general camp life are all familiar territory. Because of these materials, it naturally weighs close to 2.6 kg when empty, which may already cause a minor cardiac event in an ultralight hiker. But this is not their pack. I have used it in winter, snow, cold, rain, mud, summer heat and dry, desert-like terrain... it endured all of it. Endured? It asked for more. Even now, it still looks almost new.

The 5.11 RUSH 100 does not answer the question “How little can you carry?” but rather: if you have to carry a lot, how can you carry it so that you still feel like moving tomorrow? But — and this is a very important point — you should not pack thoughtlessly when you have time to plan. This pack can carry a great deal comfortably, but you need to know how to pack it properly. Not too much, not too little. If you do not fill it completely, it remains just as comfortable as when it is full. “Full” is an option, not something that has to be pushed to the limit every time. Learn to pack intelligently, and this backpack will support you in that as well.

Access and organisation – because the item at the bottom is always the important one

The main compartment, which opens 270 degrees from the top, is one of the most practical solutions. The pack opens like a suitcase, so there is no need to empty everything just to reach equipment stored at the bottom. And, by ancient law, that is always the item you need. This is one of the oldest laws of the outdoor world, somewhere beside “if you carry a rain jacket, it will not rain; if you leave it at home, there will be a flood”.

The front admin pocket, fleece-lined eyewear compartment and separable lower compartment, along with the pass-through panels and the generous MOLLE surface, all show that the 5.11 RUSH 100 is not merely large, but highly organised. And that is a major difference. A large pack that cannot be packed properly is simply grief made manifest in textile form. The 5.11 RUSH 100 is not like that, because it can be used as a carefully considered system.

The lower compartment is unusual. It does not necessarily work best as a traditional sleeping-bag compartment; it is more suitable for separating smaller pieces of equipment. This may feel strange at first, especially to someone accustomed to the logic of conventional hiking packs. But if the user is willing to rearrange their packing habits slightly, it works extremely well. Or perhaps it simply needs an ultralight sleeping bag... which is a slight contradiction, is it not...?

Technical matrix summary 4.71

Weight

5

2.6 kg — considering the quality, materials, multifunctional back system and overall construction, this is not excessive.

Material

5

 500D and 1050D Nylon, YKK, Duraflex — top-level quality.

Ease of use

5            Simply excellent.

Durability and toughness

5            This would deserve an extra point.

Suspension system

5

Every strap, buckle and piece of webbing is extremely well designed and executed.

Top pocket

5

I had only one tiny issue with it, but it is not enough to deduct a point: the upper zipper could be two-way. That, however, would merely be the icing on the cake.

Main compartment(s)

5            270-degree opening, easy to use, spacious and exceptionally easy to organise.

Side pouches

4

I deducted a point because of the slight instability of the attachment system; everything else is excellent.

Lower compartment

5

With a revised packing approach, it deserves full marks. If you are too lazy to adapt, deduct one point.

MOLLE

5            This deserves an extra point as well.

Other features and straps

5

Hydration tube port, internal frame, compression and carrying straps, reinforced lower section.

Rain cover

2

None is included, and there is no dedicated storage space for one — although the fabric itself is strong and moderately water-resistant.

 Extras

5            Removable multifunctional frame support, removable hip belt with back-to-front tightening, organiser compartments.

5.11 RUSH 100

A brief comparison — what belongs in the same category?

The RUSH 100 is best compared with larger tactical and hunting backpacks. In this field, possible alternatives include:

  • larger tactical and expedition packs from Mystery Ranch

  • hunting and tactical backpacks from Eberlestock

  • load-carrying systems from Kifaru

  • larger military packs from Tasmanian Tiger

  • certain large Osprey or Deuter trekking packs, if civilian alternatives are also considered

Mystery Ranch and Kifaru may generally offer more advanced professional load-carrying systems, particularly at very high weights. Eberlestock may provide more in terms of hunting and weapon-carrying solutions. Trekking packs from Osprey or Deuter may perform better in ventilation, civilian hiking comfort and lower empty weight.

The strength of the 5.11 RUSH 100, however, is its extremely wide range of use. It is not a tool optimised for one specialised task, but a load-hauling workhorse that can be used in many different situations. A little hiking pack, a little tactical system, a little bug-out bag, and a little wilderness toolbox. Like a Swiss Army knife, only larger, heavier, and if you drop it, you do not need to worry about what will happen.

Who do I recommend it for?

+ The 5.11 RUSH 100 can be an excellent choice for

  • military or law-enforcement tasks,

  • building a bug-out bag,

  • bushcraft and survival-oriented trips,

  • hunting,

  • three-to-five-day trips with heavy equipment,

  • winter wilderness travel or use in poor weather,

  • outdoor users who value durability and organisation more than low weight.

- The 5.11 RUSH 100 is not a good choice for

  • ultralight hikers,

  • fast performance hikes,

  • lightweight summer ridge walks,

  • those who dislike tactical styling,

  • or anyone looking for a light, airy, classic trekking pack.

Final thoughts — a workhorse, not a racing greyhound

The 5.11 RUSH 100 is not a delicate hiking pack. Heavy? For some people, yes. For me, that extra weight gives back more than it costs. Too tactical? For some people, yes. In my opinion, its appearance is actually quite restrained.

But if you need to carry a heavy load, if durability matters, if organisation matters, and if your equipment is not decoration but a working tool, then the 5.11 RUSH 100 is one of the most viable backpack choices in this size category. It does not try to win the gram-counting competition, but it will help when things become difficult. It will still be standing beside you when the dandies have long since gone home because the weather has become “slightly character-building”.
